I have been playing sports from the second I could walk. What they don't tell little girls or prepare them for is the road to come for being a woman in sports. For me personally, I can remember being told by boys in elementary school is that people do not care about girls' sports. Eight-year-old me was furious by this statement because I didn't understand why girls' sports were so inferior to boys' sports, and to be honest twenty-year-old me still hates this statement. 

 

Not only is being a girl and playing girl sports challenging but being a girl involved with men's sports is another uphill battle in itself. Unfortunately, some men have the belief that sports such as football and baseball are too complex for women to understand, which is definitely not the case. Not only do I have experiences with being question by men on the rules, and players of football but many of my friends do as well. What I do not understand is why is it that when women show interest in sports it comes as a surprise, for years women have been competing in sports, and more recently we have seen women crossing over and joining the boys. Incredible women like Sara Fuller, who was the first woman to score in a Power 5 conference football game, and Mo,nae Davis who was the first girl to pitch in the little league world series, have both shown how women can have a space in sports in general but also on the men's side.
 

Women are powerful and in sports, I firmly believe women deserve the same amount of respect and appreciation men get in the sports world. . Men and Women need to come together to fight for higher pay and more coverage of women's sports and women in men sports. It is important to keep girls' sports alive and well and without a fight from both sides the future of women's sports could be at risk.

 

The next time someone questions what it is like being a woman in sports, tell them yes it is hard but it is worth every single argument and battle
